I grew up off the grid. I still think that way.
-Brent W. Powell
Filmmaker, photographer, and creative strategist based in Helena, Montana. I work with outdoor brands and organizations building something real — and need a collaborator who’s actually been outside.
Where I’m coming from
I grew up in rural Oregon without running water or reliable electricity. I slept outside in the summer and hunkered in a sleeping bag when my bedroom dipped below freezing. We grew food, cut firewood, and figured things out. It wasn’t romantic — it was just life.
That upbringing gave me a specific way of seeing. I’m comfortable in places that aren’t finished. I notice what’s real versus what’s performed. And when I’m making something — a film, a brand campaign, a photo essay — I can tell the difference between work that came from somewhere and work that was assembled.
That distinction is the thing I bring to every project.
I’ve spent the past decade and a half working in web, media, and marketing — including as Director of Web & Media at Headwaters Economics and as the founder of Thirty Five Media. The range is the point: I can think strategically and pick up a camera and write the script and build the site. Most people can do one of those. I do them all, and they make each other better.
What I actually do
I work with outdoor brands, adventure companies, and mission-driven organizations as a filmmaker, photographer, and creative strategist. My strongest skill is bridging creative vision and real execution — so you don’t have to choose between quality and getting it done.
Filmmaking & video — Documentary storytelling, brand films, commercials, event coverage. I direct, shoot, and edit.
Photography — Campaign, editorial, product, and event work. I’ve been shooting since before it was a career.
Creative strategy & consulting — For organizations who need a clearer story, a tighter campaign, or someone to pressure-test the plan before you spend the budget.
I work through my production brand, Thirty Five Media.
Of my diverse interests, these are probably what you came to see…
Photography
A lifelong passion, photography is therapy and a recharging activity for me.

Filmmaking
Take photography, but multiply it by 24 (or more) and add audio, you have video.
Websites/Apps
Probably one of my more understated skills, but it’s actually my main gig.
